Increasing & Decreasing Numbers
How To Arrange Numbers in increasing order
To Arrange numbers in increasing order we arrange from
SMALLEST to LARGEST
To Arrange numbers in decreasing order we arrange from
LARGEST to SMALLEST
Steps to arrange in increasing numbers
Example 1 :
Arrange 312, 65 , 208 in increasing order.
Step 1 :
Put given numbers in Place Value Chart
H T O
3 1 2
6 5
2 0 8
Step 2 :
H T O
3 1 2
Left 0 6 5 Right
2 0 8
Now solve as given in Step 3.
Step 3 :
Now all numbers are 3- digit numbers.
H T O
3 1 2
Left 0 6 5 Right
2 0 8
Compare Left most digit of all given numbers.
The number having smaller left most digit it smaller size than the number having larger left most digit.
Here left most digits are 3 , 0 , 2.
Here 0 is smallest , 2 is bigger and 3 is biggest.
So 065 is smallest number
208 is bigger number and
312 is biggest number
So numbers in increasing order are
65 < 208 < 312
Step 4 :
1) 453 , 231 , 742

2 0 8
Step 2 :
65 is a 2-digit numbers but others are 3- digit number.
Formula 1 : We know numbers with less digits are smaller than more digit numbers.
So 65 is smallest among the three numbers.
Now check remaining numbers for smaller number.
Formula 2 : Since 65 is a 2-digit number and others are 3-digit number.
So make 65 also a 3-digit number by adding zero as left most digit.
H T O
3 1 2
Left 0 6 5 Right
2 0 8
Now solve as given in Step 3.
Step 3 :
Now all numbers are 3- digit numbers.
H T O
3 1 2
Left 0 6 5 Right
2 0 8

208 is bigger number and
312 is biggest number
So numbers in increasing order are
65 < 208 < 312
Step 4 :
If left most digit of all numbers are same, then compare second left most digit.
If second left digit of all numbers are also same , then compare next digit and so on till we get different digit at a particular place.
Q. A. Arrange given numbers in ascending order.
1) 453 , 231 , 742
2) 89 , 543 , 21
3) 708 , 432 , 211
4) 701 , 27 , 630
5) 315 , 43, 620
1) 450 , 10 , 428
Q.B. Arrange given numbers in descending order.
1) 450 , 10 , 428
2) 890 , 514 , 210
3) 718 , 32 , 401
4) 531 , 207 , 620
5) 35 , 430, 603
